Description:

Overview

Designed for all K-8 Indiana school educators teaching across all subjects, the Integrating Computer Science professional development workshop is designed to equip teachers with the knowledge and instructional strategies to integrate computer science into existing coursework.

The workshop will provide an intro to computer science, pedagogy, overview of the online curriculum, teacher dashboard, and strategies for teaching “unplugged” classroom activities.

The day will consist of learning, engaging with your peers with meaningful discussion, and gaining strategies to implement in the classroom.

About the Presenter

Jenna Garcia: Nextech Educator Success Director

Having worked in the industry, the classroom and at non-profits, Jenna has a unique understanding of Nextech’s mission as well as how to best tailor opportunities for Indiana’s educators looking to bring computer science to their students and schools. She is excited to help educators learn and grow in their computer science journeys.

The topics covered in each workshop include:

  • Role of Computer Science in society and the classroom
  • Indiana Computer Science Standards, including where to locate the standards and how to navigate the curriculum map
  • Introduction to the 6 core concepts of CS: 
    • Data and Information
    • Computing Devices and Systems
    • Programs and Algorithms
    • Networking and Communications 
    • Impact and Culture
    • Digital Literacy
  • Experiencing classroom lessons for each core concept

Target Audience:

  • Computer Science Teachers
  • Media/Library Specialists
  • Resource/Tech Teachers
  • General Education classroom teachers

Special Instructions:

Each of the 9 Indiana Educational Service Centers will host participants ready to engage with a live/virtual presenter, collaborate within the room, share with other ESC groups across the state.

This event is open and free to all Indiana educators.  ESC membership is not required.

Event Cancellation Policy

NIESC Cancellation Policy

Registrants who notify NIESC of their cancellation on or before the registration deadline date will not be required to pay the registration fee.

  • Registrants who cancel after the registration deadline but one week before the workshop date or call to cancel on the day of the workshop, will pay 50% of the registration fee.
  • Registrants who neglect to call or notify NIESC of their cancellation will be responsible for paying the full registration fee.
  • On official school corporation weather-related cancellation days, registrants will not be required to pay registration fees
