Description:

This one-day course explores the essential language comprehension skills for supporting students to make meaning of text. Participants will explore research outlining comprehension strategy (summarizing, inferring, etc.) and skill instruction (main idea, cause and effect, etc.) as measures of understanding, not tools for teaching comprehension.

Agenda:

  • Summarize the impact of prior knowledge in making meaning and how to support front-loading knowledge to maximize learning.
  • Describe the impact of syntactic awareness on sentence-level comprehension and how to support developing this skill within the language arts block.
  • Identify different text microstructures and how to support students to recognize and use this knowledge to support understanding.
  • Describe how knowledge of text features supports organizing information to improve understanding.
  • Summarize the importance of dialogic reading in instructional design for supporting the application of and integration of multiple language comprehension skills.
  • Describe the importance of graphic organizers, visuals, and tools beyond text to support language development and aid in building schema.
  • Identify activities to support and measure comprehension outcomes.

NIESC Cancellation Policy

Registrants who notify NIESC of their cancellation on or before the registration deadline date will not be required to pay the registration fee.

  • Registrants who cancel after the registration deadline but one week before the workshop date or call to cancel on the day of the workshop, will pay 50% of the registration fee.
  • Registrants who neglect to call or notify NIESC of their cancellation will be responsible for paying the full registration fee.
  • On official school corporation weather-related cancellation days, registrants will not be required to pay registration fees
