Many school and district leaders are unaware of the powerful free tools that exist to help answer important educational questions and save time and money doing so. In this workshop, we will introduce and practice using a combination of R Studio and google/Excel sheets that can be used to address common school district data questions. No previous experience required, but participants will need to ensure that they have a computer that has R Studio installed. Although this software is free, participants may need district IT staff install this for you, if you are using a district computer. Please contact the workshop leader in advance (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you have any trouble installing R Studio before the workshop. Participants are also encouraged to bring some of their own data that they wish to analyze. We will cover data cleaning processes as well as analysis; data in any spreadsheet/csv format may be used.
R Studio is a free and powerful data analysis software that allows you to manipulate datasets far more quickly than excel or google sheets. Especially useful is the merge function, which allows the user to merge two or more sheets by common identifiers in seconds; many of the functions we will learn will save quite a bit of time in day to day data work. We will also learn how to use the graph functionality of R Studio, which may also be helpful if participants get data requests from others in their district. Another benefit with R Studio is that you can save all of your analyses in syntax, which allows you to simply copy and paste in order to rerun the same analysis on new or updated data. Once someone has the basics, they are able to do quite a lot with the program.
Dr. Molly Stewart is the Director of the INsite Consortium, a partnership based at the Indiana University School of Education which works to support school districts in their efficient and reliable management, analysis, and use of student data for operational, instructional, and accountability purposes. Specifically, we harness the power of technologies to help districts achieve their data goals, including data standardization using the Ed-Fi data standard and API. R Studio provides an additional powerful, free tool to take districts to the next level in their data analysis; it can be used with datasets that have already been standardized, but it can also be used with datasets exported directly from a student information system, assessment vendor, or other location. This workshop helps fulfill INsite’s mission to assist school districts in developing data analysis skills and strategies that harness their existing data, whether or not the district is ready to implement the Ed-Fi data standard.
