Science of Reading 101: The What, The Why, The How

Join us in the morning to learn about:  What is the Science of Reading, anyway? Why is it critical to change our instruction? What does the evidence say? How does all of the research impact our use of data and assessments? Find answers to these questions and more!

Science of Reading 201: How Does this Impact Classroom Instruction

Keep learning in the afternoon:  Leave with an action step without overturning your district practices. What changes do I need to make? Finish the day with some action steps for classroom application!

About the Presenter

Melissa Gill, WVEC Instructional Specialist

As an educator, Melissa Gill has experienced life as a primary & intermediate Classroom Teacher, Instructional Coach, Reading Specialist, and Administrator. She has facilitated preK-12 district professional development and provided MTSS leadership support. Melissa is currently the Instructional Outreach Director at WVEC! She works onsite supporting & encouraging educators in their professional learning while also fostering partnerships with various educational organizations to meet the needs of all students in Indiana.  Besides making new connections, Melissa enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with her family.

Event Cancellation Policy

NIESC Cancellation Policy

Registrants who notify NIESC of their cancellation on or before the registration deadline date will not be required to pay the registration fee.

  • Registrants who cancel after the registration deadline but one week before the workshop date or call to cancel on the day of the workshop, will pay 50% of the registration fee.
  • Registrants who neglect to call or notify NIESC of their cancellation will be responsible for paying the full registration fee.
  • On official school corporation weather-related cancellation days, registrants will not be required to pay registration fees
