Executive Director Notes

For the 2023-2022 school year, the NIESC staff is reading the book GRIT by Angela Duckworth. We are meeting monthly to discuss, reflect, and share thoughts. A few key points and statements from the book are:

  • There are four defining characteristics of grit. You can work on improving these characteristics to have more grit.
    • Interest: Thoroughly enjoying what you do is passion
    • Practice: Resisting complacency by addressing your weakness with continual practice
    • Purpose: Your work is important
    • Hope: Hope is defined in every stage of grit

  • There are six (6) ways you can become “grittier”: 1) clarify your goals, 2) discover your interests, 3) practice deliberately, 4) know your purpose,  5) practice optimistic self-talk,  6) join a gritty culture

  • There are two (2) components of grit: passion and perseverance

I encourage you to remain positive, be “gritty," and remember challenges allow for opportunities!

Angela Piazza
Superintendent

Angela Piazza is the Superintendent at Union-North United School Corporation and has been there for one year this month.

In her first year there, she has been working to get to know the staff, students, and community of LaVille. One new change implemented this year was a delayed start to Wednesdays to provide focused time for staff professional development and shared planning time for teachers.

Angela’s goal for the corporation is to continue to grow the programs and opportunities for students that will fulfill the corporation’s mission of empowering and inspiring students to excel in service, leadership, academics, and personal growth.

We asked Angela what she finds the most rewarding about her position. She shared, “As a superintendent, it is rewarding when you know you have been able to orchestrate a decision that will positively impact teaching and learning. However, it is most rewarding to see students excited and engaged in learning, growing and achieving.”

In her spare time, Angela enjoys working with adult learners as an adjunct professor and doctoral committee member/chair. She also really enjoys spending time outside and although she does like to ice skate, she prefers to be outside in warmer weather when she can walk, swim, work in the yard, and play pickle ball.
