Theresa Morris is Co-Founder and President of MPASS Education and has spent 30+ years designing mathematics curriculum and assessment for K–12 students. She was a lead author of the Smarter Balanced (SBAC) performance tasks, and she developed mathematics performance assessments at Stanford’s Center for Assessment, Learning, and Equity. Her performance-task design and accessibility framework is used for teacher training at Stanford and the Curtis Center. She led Building Educator Assessment Literacy (BEAL) with WestEd across 20 states and designed the performance assessment framework for the Texas Performance Assessment Consortium, a 44-district consortium. Her career includes classroom teaching, service as an award-winning district Director of Mathematics, and assessment consulting for CTB/McGraw-Hill, Smarter Balanced, Discovery Education, and the College Board. Description: 

Two teachers can score the same student work and land in very different places. The scoring tool is usually why. This session puts the tools side by side — traditional scoring, point-score, holistic rubrics, and analytic rubrics — and answers the question teachers actually have: which one, when, and what does each tell me that the others do not?

Participants score real student work with each tool and see for themselves how the picture of the student changes. The session also discusses which of these tools are used on ILEARN and other assessments, alongside the ones that serve day-to-day classroom work, so teachers leave able to build scoring tools that give students feedback worth having.

Participants will:

– score the same student work with traditional scoring, a point-score tool, a holistic rubric, and an analytic rubric — then compare what each revealed and hid

– decide when each tool is the right choice, and when it is the wrong one

– discuss which scoring tools are used on ILEARN and other assessments, and which ones best serve day-to-day classroom work

– calibrate with colleagues so scoring holds up across classrooms

Take-home materials:

– a performance assessment packet for their grade band (3-5, 6-8, and high school)

– a sample analytic rubric and a sample holistic rubric to use and adapt
